Frequently asked questions

How is my privacy protected?

Any data submitted are encrypted to protect user privacy. Coordinated by Rave Wireless (which already provides GPS tracking to UNC’s cell phone users through UNC Mobile), Smart911 underwent extensive testing at UNC-Chapel Hill to ensure reliability and privacy and has been reviewed by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officers and the National Emergency Number Association.

Can Smart911 track me?

Smart911 can allow Public Safety responders to locate your approximate location when you place a 911 call.

Smart911 can not be used to locate you without your knowledge. Your profile and location (if you have enabled the location service) are only available to Public Safety when you call 911.

Does Smart911 work off-campus?

Smart911 only works when your 911 call is routed to campus police. In general, this happens when you place a call on campus. From a campus landline, the call always goes to campus police. Cell phones may vary depending on your location on campus when you place the call.

What should I include in my profile?

The more information you provide, the more Public Safety knows if they need to assist you in an emergency. At a minimum, your physical description and a recent photo are great places to start. If you have a particular health issue or other personal safety concern, you can include that information as well.

YOU decide what YOU provide.

When is Smart911 available?

Smart911 is available now to students, staff and faculty members.

How does Smart911 work?

Smart911 provides emergency personnel with a profile of data about you that you create and maintain. When you place a 911 call that is directed to campus police, this profile information is automatically displayed to dispatchers, giving them quick access to important information.

What phones can provide my location to emergency personnel?

Smart911 location services works on a variety of phone models and with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. When you create your profile and register your cell phone, the Smart911 system will check your phone for compatibility with location services and tell you if it is available on your phone and carrier.

What about Guardian?

Rave Guardian, a service that allows you to set a timer that will call campus police on your behalf if it expires is still available. Smart911 is an enhancement to Guardian and you will see the Guardian term used on the UNC profile management page.

You can create a PIN and use Guardian as well as Smart911 for free!

Are my profile data available other places which use Smart911?

Your profile is part of the nationwide Smart911 database, which now includes over 4 million people. There are a growing number of municipalities, universities and other agencies that are part of the Smart911 network.

Can I register more than one phone number?

Yes, you can register more than one cell phone with Smart911. Registering land lines is not currently supported, but we are looking at ways to include information about campus phones as part of the service.
